I love the holidays; the colors, the lights, the joy. While shopping at the mall, it was evident that the holiday spirit is alive. The decor was so beautiful and the holiday campaigns were extremely convincing. During my time at the mall I noticed how much creativity was just pouring from these holiday campaigns!
I always wonder what makes these companies and teams of marketing professionals fianlly come to a conclusion and what exactly went into their creative process… Today I thought it would be nice to give you an inside scoop on my creative process. In particular, I want to share with you my creative process for creating names.
With the new year upon us, chances are that you may need to give a name to your business, an event, promotion/campaign, or new product/service. I know that in my program Fan Page Transformation, all of the ladies in my program said that they want help creating a name, so – your one big take away from today will be how to do a creative discovery for developing names. Today, I dare you to get in the spirit. The spirit of creativity that is…
Frist, we need a reason to develop a name. For me the need for creating a name often comes with a client’s new project but beyond that, I must discover what they want. Your reason could be that you simply need to name your business, fan page, new product, campaign, or develop a theme for an event. Whatever that reason may be, there are always a couple questions to ask:
- What key words would you use to describe that which needs naming?
- What is the one feeling you want people to have when they interact with you?
Answering these two questions allow you to better search for inspiration.
This leads to step two of my creative process, which is the "idea." To get this "idea" we must have some inspiration. There are many things that inspire me. I suggest setting some time aside for you to find your own sources for inspiration… allowing your creative side to play and develop ideas. My sources of inspiration stem from creative websites like design seeds. Additionally, I use Pinterest to search for inspiration surrounding my key terms.
After you find your inspiration, the third step will be to describe what it is that you are naming. Whether that is your business, promo, product/service, or event, you need to discover how you'd like to impliment this inspiration into the name.
Finally, start to look at what you have from every angle. Chances are that you will surprise yourself when you just start brainstorming. I often find this hard to do alone, because I love the opinions of those around me so I have a very good friend I call who lets me talk through my ideas out loud.
Harnessing the power of your creativity and staying in that creative mindset can be hard to do. By following these steps, however, you should be able to successfully create your own creative process when coming up with a "name."
